The Mongol Rally is the greatest motoring adventure on the planet. Each summer, hundreds of competitors thunder 10,000 miles across the mountains, desert and steppe of Europe and Asia with no backup, no support and no set route. It’s just you, your fellow adventurists and a tiny car you bought from a scrapyard.

We’ve teamed up with race organisers The Adventurists to help participating teams in this year’s race track their progress with greater ease and accuracy.

To date, reporting team locations has been problematic. As many towns have the same or similar names cars would often be plotted in the wrong place and show the wrong route. This caused confusion back at rally HQ, and also for families and friends following their progress.

By adopting what3words, the race organisers can guarantee the live tracking map will show the exact route of each team. Drivers can use the free what3words app to find and share their 3 word address. Their precise location is then plotted onto the rally map.

The offline functionality of the what3words app makes it the perfect tool for the rally, with large parts of the route in areas with limited or no mobile network coverage.

The rally’s live tracking map also includes places not to miss along the way, complete with the 3 word address of each location.

One of this year’s teams, Plug In Adventure, is also using our addressing system to log the location of electric car charging points between London and Ulaanbaatar.

You can learn more about the Mongol Rally here and follow the progress of all participating teams as they race towards the finish line at ///skews.farmland.boss .

From truck deliveries to cross-continental road trips, 3 word addresses are helping drivers navigate journeys more efficiently and reach their destinations with even greater accuracy.
