What is what3words?

We’ve divided the world into a grid of 3 metre squares and assigned each square a unique combination of words: a what3words address. It’s the simplest way to find and share precise locations.

Behind the idea

Hailing from the music industry, what3words’ CEO Chris Sheldrick identified the need for a better addressing system after bands and equipment kept getting lost.

He enlisted a friend to help turn GPS coordinates into human-friendly word combinations, resulting in the first what3words algorithm (sketched on the back of an envelope!). Launched in 2013, what3words continues to grow worldwide.

Use-cases

We’re on a mission to help everyone talk about everywhere. Around the world, what3words is used for everything from arranging meet-ups and in-car navigation, to precise parcel deliveries and reporting potholes. In emergency situations, it’s helping to save critical time, resources and lives.
